Fall ScholarSip: Responding to COVID-19 through Research and Scientific Problem Solving

Missed the event? Watch the recording via the Libraries' YouTube Channel!

Learn how Drexel researchers systematically explored issues related to the outbreak of COVID-19 during the Libraries’ 2020/2021 ScholarSip event series.

Each (virtual) ScholarSip event will address the theme Responding to COVID-19 through Research and Scientific Problem Solving. Distinguished Drexel researchers will offer “food for thought” on COVID-19 research topics and how they have responded to the pandemic both through original research and through adapting existing procedures to address its effects on various communities. Hear from trusted experts in fields such as health management and policy, public health, infectious disease, epidemiology, and nutrition sciences.

This term, we are excited to welcome guest speaker

Usama Bilal, PhD, MPH, MD
Assistant Professor
Urban Health Collaborative
Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics
Drexel University's Dornsife School of Public Health

During his talk titled Inequities as a Cause and a Consequence of COVID-19, Professor Bilal will discuss his research into how COVID-19 has amplified societal inequities. Using evidence from studies he and his team have conducted domestically (in Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York City) and globally (in Spain and Chile), Dr. Bilal will demonstrate that the existing narratives on the egalitarian nature of COVID-19 are false and that existing social inequities pose a threat to COVID-19 control.

About ScholarSip

Now in its ninth year, ScholarSip is an annual event series hosted by the Drexel University Libraries that seeks to nurture Drexel’s intellectual life and cross-campus community through informal gatherings where faculty and professional staff exchange ideas sparked by greater awareness of interdisciplinary research. Each event includes social time to build acquaintances and a short “food for thought” presentation from a member of the Drexel community. ScholarSip provides an opportunity for members of the Drexel community to gather for conversation – along with a toast to the end of the academic term.
