How to Survive a Plague: Film Screening & Panel Discussion Online
Join us for a screening of How to Survive a Plague: The Inside Story of How Science & Citizens Tamed AIDS, a powerful documentary that tells the story of two coalitions—ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group)—whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Despite having no scientific training, these self-made activists infiltrated the pharmaceutical industry and helped identify promising new drugs, moving them from experimental trials to patients in record time.
The screening will be followed by a discussion and Q/A with Dr. Randy Sell, ScD, Professor at Drexel University’s Dornsife School of Public Health, Department of Community Health and Prevention, who participated in a number of actions in the film.
The film screening and discussion will examine movie themes and its connection to the National Library of Medicine’s traveling exhibit, AIDS, Posters, and Stories of Public Health: A People’s History of a Pandemic, which is on display at Drexel University from February 12 through March 22, 2024.
This event is free and open to all members of the Drexel community and the general public. Seating is limited and registration is required.
The event will be held in person in the W. W. Hagerty Library, Room L33 (lower level). In person attendees are welcome to BYO brown bag lunch to the event. The Libraries will also provide light refreshments.
We will also provide a virtual option for those who cannot join us in person. Please register and select "online registration" to receive the Zoom link.
Co-sponsored by University Libraries, College of Nursing and Health Professions, Dornsife School of Public Health, and the Department of Community Health and Prevention.
